Pain is a natural part of life

Pain is a natural part of life, and it can affect anyone at any time. Whether you're an athlete, an office worker, or a stay-at-home parent, physical discomfort can be a daily challenge. When it comes to addressing pain, there are various healthcare professionals you can turn to. One lesser-known but highly effective option is a biokineticist. In this blog post, we will explore what a biokineticist is and for what kind of pain relief you should consider consulting one.

           What Is a Biokineticist?

A biokineticist is a specialised healthcare professional who focuses on exercise and movement as a means of improving physical well-being and alleviating pain. They are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat various musculoskeletal conditions and injuries through structured exercise programs. Biokineticists help individuals of all ages, from children to the elderly, regain functional movement, enhance physical performance, and manage pain.

When Should You Consider Consulting a Biokineticist for Pain Relief?

           Musculoskeletal Pain:

Musculoskeletal pain involves discomfort or pain in the muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, and joints. This type of pain can result from overuse, injuries, or chronic conditions such as arthritis. A biokineticist can help by designing a personalised exercise program that strengthens weak muscles, improves flexibility, and enhances joint stability, all of which can lead to pain relief.

           Post-Injury Rehabilitation:

If you've recently experienced an injury, whether it's a` sprained ankle, a torn ligament, or a post-surgical recovery, a biokineticist can help you regain strength and mobility. They will work closely with you to develop a rehabilitation plan tailored to your specific needs, ensuring a smooth and effective recovery process.

           Chronic Pain Management:

Conditions like chronic lower back pain, fibromyalgia, or osteoarthritis can significantly impact your quality of life. Biokineticists can provide non-pharmacological solutions to help manage chronic pain. Through targeted exercises and lifestyle modifications, they can help reduce pain, improve function, and enhance your overall well-being.

           Preventative Care:

Prevention is often the best strategy when it comes to pain management. Biokineticists can work with you to identify potential risk factors for future injuries or chronic conditions and develop a preventive exercise plan. Strengthening and conditioning the body can help you avoid pain and discomfort in the long run.

           Sports Injuries and Performance Enhancement:

Athletes often turn to biokineticists to recover from sports-related injuries and to improve their athletic performance. These professionals can design sports-specific training programs to enhance strength, endurance, and agility while also addressing any existing injuries or imbalances.

A biokineticist can be a valuable ally in your journey to pain relief and improved physical well-being. Their expertise in exercise-based therapy, personalised rehabilitation plans, and comprehensive understanding of the human body's biomechanics make them a reliable choice for managing various types of pain.

Whether you're dealing with musculoskeletal pain, recovering from an injury, managing chronic discomfort, seeking preventive measures, or aiming to excel in your athletic pursuits, a biokineticist can provide the guidance and support you need. Remember that early intervention is often key to a quicker and more effective recovery, so don't hesitate to consult a biokineticist when you need pain relief and improved quality of life.

There is a no-gravity affect in water. This alleviates the load on the knees and hips. The American College of Physicians (ACP) updated the protocol for the management of LBP and recommends nondrug as the first-line therapy. The prescription of drugs carries several risks associated with the treatment. Toich (2017) points out that ACP recommends a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug or skeletal muscle relaxant if drug therapy is deemed necessary.

However, exercises are strongly recommended and considered more effective and very unlikely to cause harm. Patients are advised to remain physically active. Inactivity adversely affects treatment and recovery. A variety of different types of exercises are recommended.

These include: low-to-moderate intensity aerobic exercise, high intensity aerobic exercise, core stabilization and muscular strength exercises and flexibility programmes. However, the most effective form of exercise as treatment is unknown and more research is required.

Since LBP is a disorder that impacts on activities of daily living (ADL), functional ability and can disrupt body functions and quality of life, patients with LBP are seeking relief that is sustainable and cost effective. According to Mayer, Gatchel and Kishino (1986) chronic lower back pain could be the most expensive benign condition in America.

Kahere and Ginindza (2020) considered the burden of non-specific chronic low back pain among adults in KwaZulu-Natal and found non-specific lower back pain is a leading cause of disability with a significant socioeconomic burden. Despite all these challenges, LBP is regarded as a trivial condition and remains poorly investigated. the findings of Harvard Health Publishing (2019) contend that there is sufficient evidence that exercise therapy forms an essential intervention in a rehabilitation programme that may include: balancing; stretching; strengthening; and aerobic.

The value of hydrotherapy as therapeutic medium needs to considered in the treatment of LBP. The buoyancy of the water enables a greater range of movement and should help to induce relaxation and to relieve pain.

Lower back pain (LBP) is a challenge that individuals will experience sometime over their lifetime. The diagnosis can be complicated since the pain may result from, among others, damage to the intervertebral discs, compression of nerve roots, improper movement of the spinal joints and the consequences of aging.

Research studies by Shipton (2018) and Pretorious (2019) indicate that the prevalence of lower back pain (LBP) have increased over the years and is one of the leading causes of limited activity, lack of fitness and ultimately reduced productivity, incapacitation and disability.

The lower back consists of five large vertebrae, called the lumbar spine, which is surrounded by muscles, tendons, and ligaments that all provide crucial support. The weight of the upper body is supported by the lower back which consists of a collection of interconnecting bones, joints, nerves, ligaments and muscles that provide the necessary support, strength and flexibility.

The lower back provides the mobility associated with bending and twisting and supports a wide range of motions of the upper body. The muscles in the lower back support the spinal column, flex and rotate the hips while walking. The nerves supply sensation and power the muscles in the pelvis, legs, and feet. Accordingly, the lower back is susceptible to injury and pain and the result of which could be debilitating.

Non-specific lower back pain usually does not have a specific nociceptive cause and therefore the pain is non-specific. To this end, Morris, Daniels and Granguli (2018) research into the prevalence of non-specific LBP in Africa suggest that LBP as a common health problem, is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal condition found among developed and developing nations.
